CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS & SAILORS MONUMENT
"To the men of Boston who died for their country on land and sea, in the war which kept the union whole, destroyed slavery and maintained the constitution, the grateful city has built this monument that their example may speak to coming generations"
This inscription was framed by Harvard University President Charles W. Eliot. Located on Flagstaff Hill in Boston Common. The cornerstone was laid on Monday September 18, 1871 and the monument was finally completed and dedicated September 17, 1877, cost $75,000, designed by Martin Milmore.
The four figures at the base of the monument represent Peace, the Sailor, the Muse of History and the Soldier. Atop the monument Liberty stands.
